Humans have spent years and experiences defining and understanding their youngest self- Child and Childhood. The adult brains have decoded so many philosophies and methodologies by which they can impart education to young minds born to grasp and grow to achieve their highest levels of existence. Amidst the several prevailing thoughts of 1900s came up Maria Montessori’s revolutionary thought of the Child not being a ready-to-learn product instead, the most natural and organic version of Humans.

Based on her observations and experiments with kids of various ages and backgrounds, she concluded that the child’s mind is best called as “Absorbent Mind” which is born incomplete and whose unique task is to finish its own formation. This tasks initiates right from birth and lasts for a period of twenty-four years. Hence education should begin right from birth. Having said that, what is ‘education’ has to be redefined. To a newborn, education cannot be imparted because there is no vessel ready to receive it.

The nature of education has to be such that works towards the development of the mind. This process of development is not unidirectional or instinctive. We as adults need to build a sound progressive as well as suitable environment for every age to achieve the desired goals. The goals desired have to be age-appropriate as well. The process of absorbing is the continuance and hence should be given timely importance.

We resonate with the path-changing ideas of the Italian Physicist Maria Montessori. We, humans, develop our intelligence through all of our five senses, hence for a child total development model is best suited. Amongst the five senses, the most crucial one is ‘Touch’, therefore the connection between the hand and brain is critical and essential. Maria Montessori believed that the brain should not be given anything that the hand has not touched. Most importantly, the abstract ideas and information that we intend to impart to the children should first be given to them in the form of concrete form. This concrete form is very basically called ‘Toys’ or pedagogically called ‘development tools’.

The Play Chapter has been sculpted on the philosophy of providing paramount variety as well as the quality of these development tools to the future of humankind.
